History
In the time of the Romans the famous Gladiator fights were loved. Two swordsmen fought in an arena for death or the gladiolus. After the fight the winner was covered under gladiolus that were thrown from the crowd. The origin of the name Gladiolus is the Latin word Gladius and that means sword. The flower has also a swordlike shape and is also called a sword lily. Therefore a gladiolus symbolizes strength and victory since the early ages.
